Wenger - Szczesny is Arsenal’s No 1

Postby Dejan » Fri Jan 28, 2011 5:11 pm

Wojciech Szczesny is Arsenal’s No 1 at the moment, according to Arsène Wenger.

The Polish keeper has taken the gloves following injuries to Lukasz Fabianski and Manuel Almunia and now, the manager believes, the 20-year-old has to be ousted from that position.

At Friday’s press conference, Wenger also confirmed that the Spaniard would return to the squad this weekend after four months out with elbow and ankle injuries - but he might not start against Huddersfield.

During his absence, Almunia was linked with a move away from Emirates Stadium. But the manager revealed he’s happy to have him at the Club. However the 33-year-old still has a job on his hands to recover his old position.

“At the moment Wojciech is No 1,” said Wenger. “He's done nothing for me to take him out.

“[As for Sunday], I can rotate the goalkeepers. In the Cups I sometimes play different ones. But Almunia has not played for a long, long time.

“I am happy that he’s here,” Wenger went on. “I don't feel that any player is happy not to play. But he's under contract and as long as he is at the Club we're happy to have him. I like him as a man and as a player and I have shown that in my decisions.”

Its hard to tell. Sczesny hasn't been tested too much, but he gives me confidence that Flappy doesnt..

Gotta be Sczesny for me.

We just have to wait till when Fabianski is declared fit then. Cos he sure looks like our number 1

fabianski as he appears to have learnt from his mistakes, he has been fairly solid so far this season.
Bit of a pisstake if sneezy just walks into the number one spot when fabianski worked for it. doesnt give very good message.
Schezny should have to prove himself first.

Hopefully Wenger just means whilst fabianski as injured or whatever

I think this is Wenger simply saying that Szczesny's ahead of Almunia. Some people (who don't know Arsenal or Wenger very well) are probably expecting Almunia to walk back into the first team now that his "injury" has gone, and this is Wenger saying "ha ha... ha ha ha ha ha... ha ha... ha... NO! Almunia will not start!"

Fabianski's still number 1 in a fully fit squad.

Sczesny just reminds me of Schmeichel. He looks safer with crosses into the box. :hiding:

I don't agree mate...

For the past few weeks something about Szczesny's rise to the top has been nagging at me...

Almunia dropped after getting injured, Fabianski coming in and doing superbly...

Now Fabianski has developed some sort of "injury" and Ches is in goal...

Coincidence? Maybe, but something it definitely up.

Strange because Chesy scares the sht out of me, he doesnt speak, he doesnt come for balls when defenders want him too, comes for balls but doesnt tell players hes coming and clatters them or theres a mix up! cant kick a ball either.

Flappers please.

I would prefer flappy...but I think wenger says that because flappy is injured...it also wouldn't be fair for flappy. now that he has proved that he's ready. but flappy is out with a strange injury for a while now...

If flappy would be our number 1, then there is no point of making this statements by wenger.

im divided on this one because fabanski has been fablous and really decent. but for me its a funny one as with shizzle we have a great clean sheets record. and i think on my personal viewing, he let 1 goal in 4 or 5 games, and not more than one! only a silly stat ive noticed. but he has changed something so far as i see it, dunno.. shizzle needs improvements but hes 20!
